Elizabethtown Community and Technical College (ECTC) is making it easier for students to find the support they need by introducing the Student Success Hub, located in the Academic Technical Building (ATB) on the Elizabethtown campus. It will be led by longtime professor and new Director of Student Success Josh Druen.
The Student Success Hub co-locates several student support programs, including tutoring services, success coaches and resources — specifically, the Writing Lab, the Office of Cultural Diversity, TRIO Student Support Services, the Computer Lab, the Smile Lab, and Family Scholar House. It will also host a variety of student clubs and activities. A newly established welcome center will ensure students are connected with all relevant services.
“It’s a one-stop shop for students to get the help they need,” Druen said. “As a team, we’re helping students make direct connections to services they might not realize are available to them.”
For example, a student may seek out a writing tutor, but also will benefit from working with a success coach who provides academic counseling or Family Scholar House for other needs such as internet service. This cohesion will make the most difference for a student, he said.
As a new academic year begins Druen wants all students to know the hub exists to support them.
“If you have issues with technology or have issues with your classes, or just want to come hang out, we’ll get you connected with the right people and get your semester off to a good start,” he said.
Chief Academic Officer Darrin Powell said the goal of the Student Success Hub is to improve student success, including grades and program completion, which often requires more than academic support.
“The Student Success Hub was created so that students can have a single location for support, whether that is tutoring or assistance with basic needs,” he said.
Powell added that Druen’s classroom experience will serve students well.
“Mr. Druen is uniquely suited to understand the needs of our entire student body,” Powell said. “He has a long teaching history with both technical and general education students that will let him tailor the services of the Student Success Hub to meet student needs.”
Druen, a geography professor, is starting his sixth year at ECTC. Prior to joining the ECTC faculty, the Hart County native taught at Maysville Community and Technically College for 14 years, first as an HVAC instructor and then a geography instructor. He holds a master’s degree in higher education and a bachelor’s degree in geography from Morehead State University, as well as an associate in applied science degree in general occupational studies from ECTC.
