ECTC will host First Generation Week to recognize the accomplishments of first-generation students. The event, a first for the college, will be held Nov. 7-9 and will celebrate the tenacity and dedication of these students as they pursue higher education.
“First-generation students face unique challenges – from financial need to the lack of information and support when life gets in the way,” said ECTC Chief Student Affairs Officer Dr. Corina Langford. “With resources at ECTC like the Student Success HUB and Family Scholar House, we’re able to assist students and help them meet their goals. First Generation Week is the perfect opportunity to celebrate all they accomplish in their higher education journey.”
ECTC also offers three TRIO programs to assist students with academic and life needs: TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO Educational Opportunity Center and the TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science Program.
The First Generation Week celebration is made possible by a $500. [TJN(2] grant secured through the Center for First Generation Student Success. These funds extend an institution’s ability to reach more first-generation students, engage more members of their community, launch new programs or events, and provide additional services surrounding a first-generation college celebration. ECTC is the only college in Kentucky and one of only 50 colleges in the country to receive the grant.
Approximately one in five ECTC students is considered first-generation, meaning neither parent holds a college degree. ECTC has intentionally focused on supporting first-generation students by developing resources like the Hudson First Generation Scholarship fund, established by alumna Selena Hudson and her husband Mike. First Generation Week will build on these efforts with a mix-and-mingle breakfast, student and alumni panels to help students connect, and by highlighting helpful campus and community resources.
“Our team believes in seeking funding that makes a difference in the lives of our students,” said ECTC Chief Institutional Advancement Officer Megan Stith. “We are grateful to the Center for First Generation Student Success in helping us connect and celebrate first-generation students as they make valuable contributions to our college and community.”
