Willisburg Medicaid providers reported $25,900,544 in billing for services under the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment category in 2024, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid Provider Spending database. This reflected a 7.6% increase from 2023, when billing for these services reached $24,066,438.

Medicaid, the public health insurance program run by states and funded through both federal and state sources, covers low-income residents, seniors, children, and individuals with disabilities. It remains a significant component of the U.S. health care system.

Because Medicaid is publicly funded, shifts in local billing amounts reveal how taxpayer health care money is allocated in each community.

The “Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment” classification groups together Medicaid-billed services identified by specified HCPCS and CPT coding ranges. This analysis assigned each billing code to one service category using consistent code prefixes and numeric ranges, making it possible to evaluate related services collectively and keep rankings consistent by avoiding double counting.

Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment accounted for the largest share of Medicaid payments among service categories in Willisburg for 2024.

Statewide in Kentucky, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment was third among service categories by total Medicaid payments in 2024.

Between 2019 and 2024, Medicaid spending for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment in Willisburg grew by $18,221,512, equivalent to a 237.3% increase. Spending saw substantial yearly gains during certain periods, with large annual increases recorded in 2020 and 2021.

Payments were not spread evenly across Willisburg; the majority went to a select few ZIP codes. In 2024, ZIP code 40078 received $25,900,543 in Medicaid funds for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment, comprising 100% of the city’s total payments in this category during the year.

Within this category, Medicaid funds were primarily concentrated among a limited set of billing codes.

While Medicaid payments for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment grew by 7.6% in Willisburg from 2023 to 2024, all claim categories increased by 10.3% in the city during the same period.

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services data show that federal and state Medicaid spending together hit roughly $871.7 billion in fiscal year 2023. This was about 18% of the nation’s total health care expenditures, up from $613.5 billion in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

This translates to spending growth of about 40% over several years, due largely to expanding enrollment and increased service use during and following the pandemic.

Recent federal budget laws enacted during the Trump administration have introduced proposals for significant federal Medicaid funding reductions and program restructuring. The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” signed in 2025, anticipates more than $1 trillion in federal Medicaid cuts over the next decade. It implements work requirements and greater cost-sharing, potentially limiting funds and coverage for some beneficiaries and increasing cost burdens for states moving forward.
